Israeli soy ingredients company Solbar has launched a new steam-textured soy protein, for use in a range of convenience foods (meat and non-meat), snacks and functional health foods.

Bontex contains up to 0.4 per cent soy isoflavones and is an excellent source of soy protein. Solbar claims that by adding 50g of Bontex to the application, manufacturers can offer a daily intake of 50 mg isoflavones.

"Isoflavones are regarded as a natural alternative to the controversial Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)," said Tova Arditi, clinical nutritionist at Solbar Hatzor. "The availability of both soy protein and isoflavones in Bontex offers convenience food manufacturers a vehicle for bringing tasty meals together with health benefits."

Due to High Temperature/Short Time [HTST] processing, the flavour and odour profile of Bontex is exceptionally bland, claims the company. It also absorbs natural flavours during cooking. Bontex can be hydrated to 3-4 times its weight in hot water in 2-3 minutes, and 2-3 times its weight in cold water in 4-5 minutes.

Solbar's soy proteins and soy isoflavones are available from non-GMO Identity Preserved soybeans. Solbar Hatzor also makes textured soy concentrates (Contex), textured soy flours (Soytex) and a recently developed multi-functional soy protein concentrate (Solcon S) for meat, poultry and fish applications. Sister company Solbar Plant Extracts markets Solgen and Nutragen soy isoflavones.
