A BBC televisual programme broadcast last week has concluded there is no need for food supplements in a balanced diet and that much of the science backing claims is bogus.

The show was part of a series called Professor Regan’s Diet Clinic that tested a host of health claim-making products. It criticised the vitamins industry for testing products on unhealthy individuals and then marketing them at healthy individuals.

Two vitamin users were found to be getting sufficient nutrients from their regular diet despite spending thousands of pounds on their food supplements over 15 years.

Dr Marilyn Glenville, a UK based nutrition expert, argued food supplements were often consumed because they filled a “nutrition gap” in people’s diets.
