The UK Health Food Manufacturers’ Association (HFMA) has responded to a professor who recently claimed, “many people think that they can reduce their cancer risk by taking supplements, but evidence does not support this”.

The HFMA said the comments made by Professor Martin Wiseman, medical and scientific adviser at the World Cancer Research Fund, did not reflect a large body of evidence that demonstrated those that took supplements suffered less from chronic diseases.

“The best nutritional solution for most people is to eat as healthy a diet as possible, combined with the adoption of other health-related lifestyle changes. Daily multivitamins also provide important nutritional insurance for millions of users who follow the recommended daily intake instructions,” said HFMA executive director, Graham Keen.

A recent UK Food Standards Agency report found that among adults between the ages of 19 and 64, only 13 per cent of men and 15 per cent of women eat the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables every day.
