Norwegian health products company Midelfart is working on a green tea-based drink, containing the fat reduction ingredient Tonalin, currently only available in foods in Spain.

The company already markets the Tonalin brand conjugated linoleic acid in capsules but said this week it is now ready to develop functional foods and drinks containing the Cognis ingredient.

The new Midelfart product will comprise of a sachet of Tonalin powder packaged separately from the green tea, but designed to dissolve in the drink.

Cognis has recently launched a new form of the CLA, described as a 'high active water dispersible powder', suitable for use in beverages and other foods.

"We saw that sales of the products in Spain are going well and after the study this year showing its safety and efficacy we decided to develop this product," said Glen Nielsen, product manager at Midelfart.

The study published this year in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition demonstrated both the long-term safety of Tonalin and its body fat reduction properties.

Midelfart has been heavily involved in the weight loss market since launching Tonalin supplements in 1999. By 2002, it had become one of the weight loss market leaders, according to an IMI report, with more than $11 million worth of this product purchased by Norwegians during 2001.

The report also added that the Norwegian market for diet foods was undeveloped in comparison to the US with few low-fat prepared foods available and therefore holds significant potential for 'diet aids'.
