Geir Wilhelm Wold is a Norwegian fisherman, just like his father and his father before him. But when cod catch waste began to bother him Wold bought the Norwegian fish retail brand Vesteraalens, landing a new role as an omega-3 supplier and product maker.

“It’s very simple – we are fishermans and what we could see is that we had to take much more responsibility in the value chain for our raw material,” the new Vesteraalens managing director told us at Vitafoods Europe last month.

“We could also see that a lot of the value part of the fish – like by-products – was thrown away. So we decided to buy a strong brand in Norway to build up the total culture of the value chain from the fisherman to the end users.”

Its fishing practices have been certified by the Marine Stewardship Council and Wold said the company’s products were selling in the US, south America as well as Norway and Europe.
