Puleva Biotech, the R&D subsidiary of Spanish food group Ebro Puleva, reported a 57 per cent rise in profits over 2003 to €1.9 million.

Net turnover grew 26 per cent to €4.6 million.

The company said growth was driven by provision of its R&D services to outside companies.

Puleva Biotech, which is hoping to sign marketing agreements with multinationals for some of its functional food developments this year, also implemented a number of new technologies last year, including molecular evolution techniques for the production of proteins, a genomic reasearch platform to study the effects of different nutrients and foods on the expression of certain genes and a metabolic unit to assess the effects of functional foods on humans.

A report by Spanish paper La Gaceta last year said the firm is ready to start production of a novel fat, to be used in foods made by its parent company, that could help reduce heart disease risk.
