Will health claims doom innovation in Europe?

Hope that the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) might moderate its clinical-trial weighted approach for general health claims in the EU dried up on October 1, when it rejected 70 per cent of 500+ dossiers, including 181 of 181 probiotic dossiers.

Hopes of appeal or moderation by the European Commission are looking unlikely as the EC has indicated most EFSA opinions will receive little alteration. Indeed, 21 opinions have already become law.

At HIE in Paris last year, NutraIngredients asked if health claims are doomed in Europe. A year down the line, it is becoming apparent that if current methodologies prevail, for a great many sectors, they are, with potentially catastrophic results for the European food and supplements industries.
