Self-styled 'germvangelist' and microbiologist Jason Tetro says the probiotic industry is obsessed with technicalities and needs to venture back in time to access the innate, holistic power of probiotics.

“This is how we used to live,” Tetro tells us. “It wasn’t until we started processing and manufacturing food that we lost our relationship with these probiotics.”

“If marketing organisations realised this I have a feeling we would have a much better stance…”

“We’re trying to bring back the past by looking forward into the future with probiotics.”

He said the industry was too obsessed with winning health claims that did not always resonate with consumers even in Canada where health claims had been approved in recent years.

It’s a view some may dispute as Euromonitor figures show Canada to have one of the fastest growing probiotic markets in the world.

The 25-year veteran of microbiology will share his controversial views at NutraIngredients’ Probiota 2015 in Amsterdam on February 3-5.

Probiota 2015

Pre- and probiotics will be discussed at Probiota 2015 in Amsterdam on February 3-5 – less than a month away.

From the next wave of prebiotics to the future of microbiome science beyond probiotics and prebiotics, to the nutrients’ effect on mood and anxiety, and strategies on pre- and probiotic market building, Probiota 2015 is a knowledge store you probably shouldn’t miss.
