There is a huge focus on finding 'the next big thing' in terms of probiotic delivery formats. But which ones do our Probiota community think hold the most potential?

The recent Probiota event in Berlin brought together leading experts in research and business to discuss the state of play in probiotics, prebiotics and microbiome modification.

NutraIngredients asked for expert insights on a range of topics. Here we asked experts from the business and research world what they believe the most exciting probiotic for is for the future.

Peter Nählstedt, CEO of Probi told us that he believes the traditional dietary supplement format will remain the most important - but added that new delivery technologies that protect strains and deliver them with greater accuracy will become a more important part of the probiotic supplement category.

"We're starting to see new and interesting formats coming along, [like] direct dose powders" said Susanne Baekgaard of Bifodan.

Meanwhile Ihab Boulas from Unibiome told us that the most interesting format "is the format where you don't even see that you are eating a probiotic."

"For example (...) enhancing the probiotics that are present already in the food, so that you're eating the same food but you'll have better nutrition," he said.
