The International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organisation (IFFO) has emphasised the need for fish stock sustainability along with the buoyant market created by omega-3 demand, at its annual meeting in Beijing, China.

Director general Dr Jonathan Shepherd picked up on three themes – responsibility, value and health – as he addressed the meeting. South American fisheries were highlighted as examples of good stewardship of finite resources.

Chile and Peru have taken responsibility by adopting rights-based fishery management,” Dr Shepherd said.

“IFFO is taking responsibility by defending the industry against the ever-changing criticisms with sound science and by forming closer links and alliances with government and the value chain. On standards we introduced the IFFO Responsible Supply certification programme (IFFO-RS) 12 months ago.”
