Preferences and trends around fiber: Majority of consumers not aware of recommended fiber intake

As consumers around the world struggle with obesity and related health issues, they, along with public health officials and a range of organizations are pushing for healthier food choices. Fiber is gaining lots of attention as a way to provide those choices. The World Health Organization concluded that dietary fiber was the only dietary component that had convincing evidence showing a protective effect against weight gain and obesity. In fact, research conducted by the National Cancer Institute in Rockland, Maryland concluded that dietary fiber might help reduce risk of death from cardiovascular, infectious and respiratory diseases, as well from any cause.

It is no wonder that authorities such as the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommend adults should aim for a daily intake of 25 grams of dietary fiber. The health benefits the EFSA cites as associated with higher intakes of dietary fiber include a proper bowel habit, reduced risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, along with weight maintenance.
