Embria opens $10m Iowa headquarters

By Clarisse Douaud, 05-Oct-2007

Embria Health Sciences has opened a $10m headquarters in Ankeny, Iowa, which will in part support the manufacture and development of promising immunity ingredient Epicor.

Coming out of its development phase, EpiCor is an all-natural high-metabolite immunogen shown to have the antioxidant (ORAC) potency three times that of any known fruit, as well as to cause a four-fold increase in the activity of the 'natural killer' cells that guard the immune system.

The 36,000-square-foot building on 5.1 acres will serve as a site for the manufacture of the company's raw materials and researched ingredients.

The company is emphasizing that the new facility will ensure it fulfils all regulatory requirements for safety.

"The timely construction of this CGMP-compliant facility signifies not only our company's allegiance to the integrity of the ingredients we sell, but also the commitment to the overall quality of the finished products in which our ingredients are used," said Embria Health Sciences president Paul Faganel.

Accordingly the company has included features in the facility it says will enhance product cleanliness, consistency, automation and control along the lines of the US Food & Drug Administration's (FDA's) Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).

These systems include an electronic system for controlling and monitoring incoming raw materials and process control. Embria will be using trademarked system MetaGen4 to reduce risks of harmful microorganisms and decreases cross-contamination risks.

The manufacturer has now lined-up all of its North American distributors for Epicor and is being its rollout.

EpiCor and Embria, as the company bringing it to market, were born out of suspicions that the culture could have other uses following farmers' reports that their animals were not getting sick.

Moreover, in 2004 insurance adjusters noticed that Diamond V, Embria's parent company, employees had far lower sick rates than other workplaces. The company thought the culture could be boosting the immune systems of workers who handled it.
