The European Commission has released its updated list of substances that can be added to foods for particular nutritional uses (PARNUTS) under Commission Regulation (EC) No. 953/2009.

The list of approved substances has been expanded to include amino acids, carnitine and taurine, nucleotides, and choline and inositol.

The previously difficult-to-classify nutrients were added to the list following evaluation by the European Food Safety Authority.

The inclusion of these substances under the regulation will make it easier for European Union functional food and food supplement makers to incorporate the nutrients into products.
