The risk assessor had already delayed the publication of the first batch of claim opinions from July to September, and industry has been waiting with bated breath for answers today.
However, EFSA confirmed in a telephone call to NutraIngredients.com that the first 90 opinions will be published tomorrow. No further information is available at this time.
Article 13.1 covers general health claims, including those linking vitamin, mineral and herbal extract consumption with health maintenance. EFSA has a total of around 4000 of these claims to assess.
The group’s first decisions will be a key indication of the future of the industry, which is concerned that EFSA will apply the same rigorous approach that it has to the article 13.5 (emerging and proprietary science) and article 14 (children’s and disease reduction claims) dossiers.
Of around 70 article 13.5 and 14 opinions issued so far, around 80 per cent have been negative.
