GOED continues to push for higher omega-3 DRVs

The Global Organization for EPA and DHA (GOED) continues to fight for higher EU omega-3 dietary reference values (DRVs) of 500mg per day or more.

GOED executive director, Adama Ismail, said while his organization had taken a pragmatic approach over what it sees as imperfect EU nutrition labelling rules that are set to become law by year’s end, it continued to lobby to raise the current EFSA-recommended DRV above 250mg.

Unlike nutrition labelling, with DRVs, “there is no legal deadline affecting products already on the market, so it is better to take the time to set the right level, which we feel is a minimum of 500mg/day based on cardiovascular outcomes and consensus on other international recommendations,” Ismail said.

GOED represents the world’s largest EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) suppliers.

Ismail said GOED held the “same fundamental position” as a group of more than 20 international lipid scientists that has been very critical of EU omega-3 nutrition labelling proposals, and the DRV’s that will guide them.
