Evolving gut microbiota knowledge is being leveraged to drive prebiotic research forward and providing new insights into older prebiotics, according to a leading researcher.

“The concept of prebiotics finally was born before the great knowledge of the gut microbiota we have now in hand and the evolution of the techniques are really magic for a scientist now,” said Dr Nathalie Delzenne, Head of Research Group in Metabolism & Nutrition, Louvain Drug Research Institute.

Speaking after the recent European Congress on Obesity in Lyon, France, Dr Delzenne said that while the field remained in its infancy, “there are intervention studies promising data that have to be confirmed and so on” along with in vitro and animal studies.

Shane Starling attended the Congress at the invitation of Roquette.
