Seafood for health

An EU workshop on the role of seafood in the prevention of diseases is aiming to establish links with Polish industry and create new opportunities for wider participation in functional food research.

The event will give an overview of research potential in the area of seafood, currently under investigation in a EU-funded project.

The project, called SeafoodPlus, is designed to improve the scientific basis for using seafood to reduce major health problems and prevent diseases among European consumers.

Researchers are working on new tailor-made functional seafood products with 'high eating quality' and carrying out intervention studies on functional seafood products. Methods for assurance of authenticity, validity of labelling, and full traceability will also be applied.

Seafood is attracting considerable consumer attention due to the positive benefits seen from omega-3 fatty acids, found in abundance in oily fish.

Studies have shown that people who eat fish a few times a week can more than halve their risk of sudden death from heart attack.

The national contact point for the EU's Sixth Framework Programme in Szczecin, Poland, is organising the event from 2-3 December. It will include a seminar on how to compete in the European functional food market and how to obtain European funding.
