DSM ‘Sight and Life’ turns 25 and sees brighter future for the malnourished

Sight and Life began 25 years ago as a vitamin A-delivering emergency response to the Ethiopian famines of the mid-1980s.

Today, as it celebrates its birthday with the publication of a 160-page book to share its malnutrition-battling work with a mainstream audience, director Dr Klaus Kraemer, spoke of the increasingly broad remit of the DSM Nutritional Products unit – from building stakeholder networks, to educating policy makers.

“The vitamin A capsule distribution we have passed onto our partner, Vitamin Angels, for other micronutrients like micronutrient powder, MixMe, we work with NGOs and UN agencies that have the staff on the ground for the distribution,” Dr Kraemer said.

“There is an increasing interest and commitment by governments to start nutrition programmes – that has become even more accelerated over the last few years with a new movement called Scaling Up Nutrition or SUN that aims to integrate all the different stakeholders – the private sector, the UN, the governments and the civil society and bring them to one table to decide on nutrition programmes.”
