Centrifugal evaporator can help back functional food claims

“Genevac reports shipping several of its centrifugal evaporator systems to manufacturers of functional foods who are looking to validate their health promotion or disease prevention claims.”​

While functional foods are in fact forbidden under European Union law from making disease prevention claims, they can make claims about reducing risk factors that contribute to disease states, which for many in the public, mean much the same thing.

"Nutraceuticals and functional foods are intensively researched for their role in maintaining health and preventing diseases,”​ said Genevac product manager, Rod Darrington.

“The science behind is growing rapidly not only because of the growing number of new substances or type of novel foods, but also because regulatory bodies require more and more evidence on their efficacy, mode-of-action and safety​.”

The company said advanced sample evaporation technologies could go a long way to ensuring, “food and beverage samples are concentrated safely, rapidly, and with a very high degree of reproducibility.”​

It said it was also finding markets for its machines such as the HT Series Rocket Evaporator (pictured) among academia.

Modern centrifugal evaporators concentrate many samples at the same time and eliminate solvent bumping​ and can handle solvents with boiling points of up to 220°C.

Other centrifugal evaporator manufacturers include German company Martin Christ and the US firm, LabConco.
