Spanish and Danes team up on oral probiotics

Spanish start-up AB-Biotics has signed a deal with Danish company CMS Dental to launch a range of oral probiotics in Denmark.

The scientific literature contains many examples of probiotics benefitting oral health, usually strains from the Lactobacillus family, although the European Union has not approved any such claims and has rejected many under its strict system.

AB-Biotics’s formulation – called AB-Dentis – consists of Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus brevis strains.

The company said research shows the strains can help battle pathogens causing caries, gingivitis and halitosis.

Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus brevis were selected among more than 500 lactic acid bacteria strains according their specific biofunctionalities to preserve oral heatlh,” AB-Biotics spokesperson Nuria Peláez told us.

“We have developed this project following our understanding of how probiotics should be selected and we have taken into account the opinion of key opinion leaders in the field of probiotics and dentistry.”

Chief research officer in microbiology Jordi Cuñé Castellana, PhD, said the company was aware of the claims situation for its patent-protected formulation.

“We will not use any forbidden health claim for a food or food supplement. Nevertheless there are other possibilities [and other regulatory channels] to put the product in the market with or without claims. We are still dealing and discussing all the potential applications.”

Under the deal, CMS Dental has the rights to market the formulation until 2022.

AB-Biotics said it would be parading AB-Dentis at various trade shows around the world this year beginning with International Dental Supply in Cologne, Germany this month.

The Pre- & Probiotics 2013 Online Event
The global pre- and probiotic markets are in good health, with an unparalleled number of studies backing the beneficial effects of the guy-friendly ingredients. Yet Europe’s 2012 ban of all pre- and probiotic claims – and even use of the terms ‘prebiotic’ and ‘probiotic’ – has led to big challenges in the global marketplace.

Taking place on March 26th, NutraIngredients presents Pre-and Probiotics 2013, an online conference to tackle the big issues in pre- and probiotics.
