USP - United States Pharmacopeia

US Pharmacopeia

USP is a scientific, nonprofit, standards-setting organization that advances public health through public standards and related programs that help ensure the quality, safety, and benefit of medicines and foods.  USP was founded in 1820, and, today, its standards are relied upon and used worldwide. USP’s standards of identity, strength, quality, and purity for pharmaceuticals, food ingredients, and dietary supplements are published in the United States Pharmacopeia–National Formulary (USP–NF), the USP Dietary Supplements Compendium, and the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC). USP also offers more than 200 reference materials for use in methods and tests for dietary ingredients (e.g., vitamins, minerals, amino acids, botanicals, fish oils), more than 200 for excipients, and more than 150 for food ingredients (e.g., flavorings, preservatives, nutrients, colorants).

2012 USP Dietary Supplements Compendium (DSC)

The DSC combines dietary supplement standards from USP 35–NF 30 with food ingredient standards from FCC, Eighth Edition. For 2012, the DSC was updated and expanded to a two-volume set. It features almost 800 total monographs, test procedures and acceptance criteria, 23 new and revised DSC admissions criteria safety reviews, regulatory guidance, and 330 pages of full-color illustrations of macro/microscopic photographs and TLC chromatograms of selected botanical articles. The DSC offers a comprehensive resource for suitable, scientifically-sound specifications for components used in dietary supplement manufacturing. It is published every two years in a two-volume print set, in English only.

Food Chemicals Codex (FCC), Eighth Edition

The FCC, Eighth Edition, is a valuable resource for authenticating a wide variety of ingredients, including processing aids, preservatives, flavorings, colorants, and nutrients, manufactured and used around the world. It published in March 2012 and features more than 1,100 monographs with key specifications (e.g., empirical formula, function, assay, packaging), 14 appendices of tests and assays, and helpful industry information. In addition, the FCC, Eighth Edition, includes a 1,300+ entry excerpt from the new USP Food Fraud Database, which contains information on adulterants reported for specific ingredients (including analytical methods), based on scholarly manuscripts and media articles from 1980 to 2010. The FCC is available in two-year print and online subscriptions and includes a main edition and three supplements with updates.
