Vinistilbene™, a new product developed by Layn, is a 100% natural ingredient from grapevine, standardized in resveratrol and viniferin, particularly suitable for anti-aging and antioxidant formulations.
The global wine and table grape industry generates large quantities of vine pruning waste each year. People have paid little attention to these solid wastes with respect to the possible recovery of high value-added compounds which represent a great potential source of natural antioxidants. Reports to date suggest that waste grapevine contain significant levels of a compound class termed the stilbenes. Stilbenes are present in grapevine as constitutive compounds of the woody organs (like vine) and as induced substances acting as phytoalexins in the mechanisms of grape resistance against certain pathogens.
The most well known member of the grapevine derived stilbenes is trans-resveratrol (3,5,4’-trihydroxystilbene). This compound has gained significant worldwide attention because of its ability to inhibit or delay a wide variety of diseases that include cardiovascular disease and cancer, and to increase stress resistance and lifespans, and most important to the wine industry bv its link to the “French paradox”. Trans-ε-viniferin has been shown to have hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties to induce apoptosis of leukemia B-cells, and inhibit human cytochrome P450 enzymes, noradrenaline and 5-hydroxytryptamine uptake and monoamine oxidase activity.
Although some dietary sources such as wines, grapes, berries, nuts, and herbal plants contain trans-resveratrol and trans-ε-viniferin, thereby contributing to overall dietary intakes, there is increasing demand for additional supplementary products in pure forms, and for commercial applications that exploit the broad spectrum bioactivity of these compounds.
There is also potential with grapevine extracting to aid in on-farm sustainability, as well as the environmental improvement and the replacement of synthetic chemical analogs.
