Simply Organic, a new organic vegetable company is the first fresh organic produce enterprise to receiving funding under the Irish Bord Glas Business Support Programme. The company, who have leased twenty acres to grow vegetables on an existing organic farm in Co Wexford, will receive financial assistance with packaging and design and with exhibition participation. Established organic growers, most of whom are small producers growing intensively on one or two acres, have frequently criticised the state vegetable promotion agency for its lack of support for organic growers. It is now hoped that this apparent change of direction for Bord Glas will signal a new era of positive support for the expanding organic vegetable sector. Sales of organic fresh vegetables in Ireland were worth £7 million(11.19million euros) in 2000.
