British Columbia-based Active Pharma has entered into a strategic
alliance with Organic Herb Inc to distribute Resveratrol Giant
Knotweed Extract and Sesamin Black Sesame Extract in North America.

The two companies expect that the relationship will give them the combined knowledge, experience and scientific-backing to have a 15 percent share of the market for the resveratrol ingredient, and 40 percent for sesamin.

Giant knotweed is native to east Asia, and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine since the first century BC. It is an excellent source of the antioxidant phenol resveratrol (also found in red wine) which is produced by the plant in response to fungi.

Sesamin is a lignan derived from sesame seeds. A number of studies have investigated its use for health conditions such as hypertension prevention and protection of the liver.

Teaming up with Active Pharma, an eight-year old supplier to nutraceutical and pharmaceutical companies, Organic Herb plans to become a major player in the global herbal products industry by expanding its operations both within Asia and overseas.

It has the capacity to manufacture a total of 300,000 kg of herbal extracts a year, and popular products include flaxseed hull extract lignans SDG oil, macleaya cordata extract, galanthamine HBr hydrobromide, cinnamon bark water extract and alpha lipoic acid.
