ADM plans to highlight its organic whole soybean powder NutriSoy
and its soy isoflavones brand Novasoy at next week's Vitafoods
exhibition in Geneva.

The US food ingredients giant is using the event to highlight its applications in the growing health sector, and to also consolidate its presence within the European market.

The company says that its NutriSoy organic whole soybean powder provides all the nutritious components of the whole soybean in an easy to use powder format. The key nutrients and healthful ingredients of de-hulled soybeans proteins, okara fibre, isoflavones, phytosterols, prebiotic sugars and oil are retained in their naturally occurring forms.

The product also has a bland flavour profile, a smooth, rich mouthfeel and a light, creamy colour. ADM is targeting this ingredient for use in a wide variety of food systems such as soy beverages, drinking yoghurt, sour cream and cream cheese analogues.

The company is also intent on highlighting its range of soy isoflavones. Recent studies have demonstrated that soy isoflavones could provide relief from several ailments, and that soy isoflavones manufactured from whole soybeans can be effective in reducing the frequency and severity of hot flashes in early menopausal women.

ADMs Novasoy soy isoflavones are made from IP non-GM beans, under controlled conditions. Suitable for use in most supplement delivery formats and functional foods, Novasoy soy isoflavones are available in 20 per cent, 40 per cent and 70 per cent concentrations.

The company goes to Switzerland on the back of a strong financial performance. ADM reported a 29 percent increase in net earnings for the quarter ended 31 March 31 2006 a good platform for new CEO Patricia Woertz to build from.

Woertz, who will succeed G. Allen Andreas, has extensive experience in the oil industry, suggesting that the ingredients giant plans to further diversify into this field.

ADM is just one of a number of big companies that are increasingly targeting the functional, health and nutraceutical ingredient categories. Cargill for example is also looking forward to exhibiting a range of new health-focused ingredients at the exhibition, following its successful acquisition of Degussa Food Ingredients.

Indeed, four of the firm's new ingredients come from the recently acquired Germany-based Degussa Food Ingredients business. Arthred hydrolysed collagen for joint health, Leci-PS phosphatidylserine, Alipure alpha-Lipoic acid and Balantose wheat fibre will all be on display.
