Cevena weighs in on beta-glucan market potential
researching the weight loss potential for its patented beta-glucan
ingredient based on the promise of strong market potential in this
category.
The Edmonton, Alberta-company has completed a pilot study of its Viscofiber ingredient for weight loss and said it is scheduled for publication later this year. "This study validates that Viscofiber has tremendous market potential," said Cevena Bioproducts president Rod Charko. Viscofiber is derived from 50 percent oat and barley beta-glucan concentrates. Cevena claims Viscofiber is distinctive compared to other fiber materials for its particular role in promoting weight loss. As part of the pilot study, seven adult subjects with BMIs ranging from 25 to 35 took part in a 16-week trial. Each subject consumed four grams of Viscofiber daily for 16 weeks. According to Cevena, the study demonstrated that the combination of Viscofiber, a calorie-restricted diet and healthy lifestyle caused a significant loss of weight in the subjects as well as a decrease in hunger. "The key for successful weight loss with a dietary supplement ingredient is promoting a healthy and sustainable loss of excess weight," said Charko.
