Formulators ignore calcium+D+K bone health recipe
best combination of ingredients, indicates data from Mintel, with
the majority containing just calcium, without vitamins D and K.
Most people are aware that calcium is the main building block for healthy bones. But vitamin D3 has been thoroughly researched for its ability to boost absorption of the mineral. Vitamin K, meanwhile, is thought to influence the secondary modification of osteocalcin, a protein needed to bind calcium to the bone matrix. However of the 100 entries in Mintel's Global New Products Database for supplement products mentioning bone health in their literature (new products, new variants and reformulations) across all global markets since the beginning of 2006, just six contain calcium and vitamin D and vitamin K. Almost all of the 100 entries refer to calcium content, and of these refer to calcium and vitamin D. DSM Nutritional Products has recently drawn attention to the importance of including all three nutrients for optimum bone health. "The bone is only well taken care of if the entire team consisting of calcium and both vitamins is active," said the Swiss vitamin and ingredient manufacturer this week. "Fortified foods or supplements are essential in this regard. After all, healthy bones are the basis for a healthy life." Data source: Mintel's Global New Products Database.
