Cactus ingredient boosts sales for BioSerae

French nutraceutical ingredient firm BioSerae has said the launch
of three premier ingredients last year helped bolster sales and
allow more money to be spent on research and development.

The firm targetted the weight management and joint health markets with CactiNea, Id-alG and Salto3 and accounts for financial year 2006-2007 show the small company based in Bram received net profits of € 560,000 and €6.7m sales. Sales turnover has grown from 28 per cent since last year's €5.2m, and this success will allow the group to invest some 10 per cent of it on developing and expanded its position. Running costs amounted to €5.9m. Karen Jaunatre, spokesperson for BioSerae, told NutraIngredients.com: "The market for nutraceuticals is growing each year, so it is quite normal to have a growing turnover in this industry. "Bio Serae's growth was indeed planned, but the results far exceeded our forecast. We worked hard for this, and it is a great achievement for BioSerae, being a small company of 25 employees, to keep challenging the biggest firms in the nutraceutical industry." ​ The full accounts, which will not be publicly available until later this year, also show significant sales outside of France, with Bio Serae reporting more than half of sales from outside of the country. CactiNea is said to help reduce water retention while preserving mineral substance as well as acting as a powerful antioxidant. It is also made with the same raw material as BioSerae's NeOpuntia - lipophilic fibre from cactus. Also aimed at the weight management market is ID-alg, made from brown algae, and for the joint market Salto3, which contains glucosamine and chondroitin. While NeOpuntia is being heralded by the firm as its big success, weight management ingredient Cacti-Nea has been a big success with consumers, the group said. Jaunatre said: "NeOpuntia [has now been] incorporated into more than 150 finished products worldwide. Most people first heard about BioSerae thanks to NeOpuntia. But the industry is moving very quickly, and it is essential to keep innovating, it is our core business." "For the moment the ingredient that has proved to be the most attractive is Cacti-Nea. The dynamic weight management market is always in search for new, natural products. CactiNea fits with this demand, being an exotic, soluble, nicely flavoured fruit powder."
