MB North America gets Go-luo ready for sweet and natural foods
foods in the US following its independent designation of
Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status.
The ingredient is made from luo han gua - or momordica grosvenori swingle - a nutritious fruit that has been traditionally consumed in China as a stand alone food or as a seasoning or condiment. Not only is the fruit a source of vitamin C, protein and 18 basic amino acids, says the company, but it is also very sweet. As such, functional food and beverage manufacturers can also use the fruit to enhance the taste profile of their goods. "Because of the intense sweetness of Go-luo formulators can remove artificial sweeteners and make an all natural claim on the label," claims MB North America. According to the company, an independent panel of experts assembled by Cantox Health Sciences International critically reviewed the safety data surrounding Go-luo and determined the standardized liquid and powdered juice concentrates safe for use in food and beverage applications. A further advantage of the exotic ingredient is that it is suitable for diets following the glycemic index (GI). "With our Go-luo ingredients, food and beverage manufacturers can create low-calorie, sugar-free products that are in great consumer demand, as well as offerings that meet the dietary constraints of diabetics," said Stefan Wypyszyk, vice president of marketing with MB North America. Go-luo is also Kosher and Halal certified, and therefore suitable an even wider range of markets and consumer preferences. MB North America sources its luo han gua from Chinese fruit producer Guilin Layn, which it says is the leading manufacturer of this fruit globally.
