Danisco spies opportunities in xylitol health claim

- Last updated on GMT

Danisco has welcomed the approval of a ‘very strong’ health claim that xylitol chewing gum reduces the risk of caries in children, saying it now puts its customers in a strong position.

While all sugar-free gums can claim not to promote tooth decay, the health claim, approved by the European Food Safety Authority under article 14 of the new health claims regulation, positions those containing xylitol as the only ones that can actually a make caries risk reduction claims.

The ingredients firm puts the emphasis on its role as a supporter of scientific and regulatory issues.

“For example, by providing the platform for scientific substantiation, our customers are able to make very strong dental claims on products which contain an appropriate level of xylitol,” it said.
