Dutch conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) player Lipid Nutrition has welcomed last week’s verdict by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) that the weight management nutrient is safe for use in foods in the European Union.

“We are excited," said Lipid Nutrition chief executive officer, Katinka Abbenbroek.

“This positive opinion will now be reviewed by the member states who will finalise the novel food registration process. Together with the recent GRAS [generally regarded as safe] approval for Clarinol CLA [in the US], Lipid Nutrition will be able to help food companies capitalise on scientific substantiated research around weight management that largely is appreciated by their target consumer.”

Both Lipid Nutrition and the other major company in CLA supply, Cognis (with Tonalin), have launched food products in the US this year on the back of the GRAS approval that came through in 2008.
