FSA seeks views on chia seed novel foods approval

In its draft opinion, an advisory committee concluded that the South American chia seeds from UK-based Infoods Ltd were substantially equivalent to those already approved for use in breads, breakfast cereals, baked goods, and fruit, nut and seed mixes from another firm, The Chia Company, which supplies seeds grown in Australia.
Although chia seeds have long been consumed in other parts of the world, companies must seek novel foods approval in Europe for any foods that do not have a significant history of consumption in the EU prior to May 15, 1997.
