Collagen
Collagen players Rousselot, Gelita, InterHealth, BioCell have been working to build bone and joint health science for some years – simultaneously battling consumers’ perception that benefits fall within skin only.
InterHealth’s acquisition of ingredients manufacturer Chick Cart Inc bought the patents and manufacturing of its UC-II collagen brand in-house this year.
Meanwhile, BioCell’s president Suhail Ishaq claimed that this segment has seen double digit growth while other traditional ingredients like glucosamine had been sluggish.
Bones are made up mostly of collagen and calcium – which depletes with hormone changes and age. Cartilage found in the joints is also mostly collagen, and is suppler in its lower density than bones.
