Online retailer Power Body Nutrition is recalling a product from NOW Foods with two and a half times the recommended maximum levels of vitamin A.

The vitamin retailer issued a product recall notice for the supplement - which contains 25,000 IU of vitamin A from Fish Liver Oil - applying to all pack sizes (100 and 250 softgels), all lot numbers and all ‘best before’ dates.

According to a product alert issued by the UK  UK Food Standards Agency (FSA), Power Body Nutrition has recalled all batches of NOW's Vitamin A 25,000 IU from Fish Liver Oil - warning that: "Long term consumption of this product could result in liver and bone toxicity. It is a dose which can increase the risk of birth defects if consumed by pregnant women.”

The product strength equates to 250% of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommended Upper Tolerable Intake Level (10,000 IU/day).

A similar upper safe level is suggested by the U.S. Institute of Medicine’s Food and Nutrition Board.

Despite actions taken by Power Body Nutrition, and the discontinued availability of the high-strength Now Foods product on Amazon UK, the supplement can still be obtained through other websites supplying US-sourced products to the UK.

Additionally, another brand of vitamin A with identical strength to the recalled supplement remains available on Amazon UK at time of writing.

“If you have bought any of the above product do not eat it. Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund," said the FSA.
