What’s on your agenda? Define your omega-3 plan for Vitafoods 2019
With Europe’s biggest nutraceutical event just a month away, the NutraIngredients team takes a look at what’s happening with one of the biggest global ingredients categories at the show.

Now estimated to be worth €1.3 billion, the market for omega-3 fatty acids has witnessed phenomenal growth over the past 20 years

While extensive research and high consumer awareness will continue to support future growth and prominence of the category as a key trend in the health and nutrition space, research from GOED suggests most Europeans do not get enough omega-3 in their diets.

Despite growing awareness of most of these benefits, most Europeans do not get enough omega-3 from their diets, research from GOED shows.

The omega-3 resource centre, a focused knowledge hub, organised in association with GOED will again return to Vitafoods – showcasing the latest ingredients market data and information on formulation, delivery formats and applications.

Meanwhile, the omega-3 theatre will provide presentations and debates on hot industry topics that matter to business and consumers, and the BASF Index Testing Area will provide a free check of your omega-3 status levels.

Two full days of talks at the omega-3 theatre will help you delve into the latest and upcoming trends from experts.

Day one (Tuesday 7th May) kicks off with Ove Wikstrom of BASF talking about how to drive the next wave of omega-3 category growth and ‘getting more omega-3 to where it’s needed’, before Wenche Emblem Larssen of PELAGIA presents on the development of a sensory standard for fish oils.

Aldo Bernasconi, director of information and research at GOED will then provide an update of the global EPA and DHA ingredients market before Dilip Ghosh of Nutriconnect discusses the evidence, controversies, and consensus on the efficacy of omega-3 for cardiometabolic health.

A further session to be presented by GOED will be followed by a discussion on sustainable marine supplements, which will see Christien Absil from the Goodfish Foundation, Ellen Schutt of GOED and Helle Fiskbæk from Orkla Health come together to discuss ‘why we should care and how it’s done’.

Wednesday 8th begins with Dr Clemens Von Schacky from the University of Munich and Omegametrix talking about the things learned from the Omega-3 Index, and why one dose does not fit all. Elana Natker of GOED will then present a range of tips for educating the omega-3 consumer.

The final sessions will see data from a pilot RCT on krill oil presented by Professor Darija Vranešić Bender of University Hospital Centre Zagreb and the ‘Alphabet of omega-3 fatty acids’ presented by Cuie Yan.
