Unethical acts? The importance of transparency and compliance in an ever-connected world

The unethical and often illegal acts of small parts of the industry is putting huge pressure on the rest of the industry to 'get its act together' and improve on issues of supply chain transparency and regulatory compliance, say experts.

As curcumin supplements continue to hit the headlines for their link to hepatitis cases in Italy, and we see increasing global scrutiny of ingredient supply chains thanks to countless reports of contamination and adulteration of supplements, the issues of transparency, regulatory compliance and consumer trust in the industry have never been more important.

While many acknowledge the issues the industry faces, they are also quick to blame issues on ‘conmen’ or ‘cowboy companies’ acting on the fringe of the industry. But many experts also argue that there is a wider responsibility for companies to improve their own transparency processes and better communicate with consumers - not only to try and stamp out illegitimate companies who are ‘cheating the system’ but to win back confidence from untrusting shoppers.
