Miguel Toribio-Mateas, director of nutrition and health research at Atlas Biomed, speaks about the importance of personalised nutrition and citizen science to the future of nutrition innovation and advises how to utilise this period of quarantine to educate consumers.

Why are consumers so happy to wave their privacy for the sake of personalised health advice, how can collaboration open more doors for research and innovation and how can digital health companies work to boost interest efficiently and ethically during this pandemic?

These were some of the questions answered by Mateas in this podcast, explaining that personalised services and 'citizen science' will become essential tools for innovation within the next five years.

"This is the perfect opportunity to blend science with market research and give consumers what they are aching for...

"The collaboration with the academic world is essential, and also the collaboration with the industry.

Atlas Biomed is a six-year-young personalised nutrition company working to ‘gamify’ diet advice by offering a DNA test and microbiome test alongside a dieting app.

While the two home tests provide a well-rounded view of the consumer's health, the app allows the customer to take photos of their meals and receive health scores indicating how good those foods are for their microbiome health.

The app essentially encourages the customer to get a higher variety of sources of fibre into their diet but it also tells the customer what specific fibres will be particularly beneficial to them based on their microbiome test results.
