The recently published Lutein Antioxidant Supplementation Trail (L.A.S.T.) examined lutein's role in Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). The objective of this study was to determine the effect of lutein supplementation alone and in combination with other antioxidants on the macular pigment optical density and central vision integrity in the most prevalent type of AMD, termed atrophic. Atrophic AMD results in the deterioration of the macula and the inability to see central regions of the vision field. The study suggests that AMD is, at least in part, nutrition responsive and that supplementation, particularly with lutein, may improve eye function & slow its progression. The L.A.S.T. Study clearly has been unveiling for several years now - the role of lutein in eye health.
