Overcoming hesperidin low solubility and bioavailability

The citrus fruits flavanone hesperidin has emerged as a potential natural compound for cardiovascular and metabolic health. Low bioavailability and high interindividual variability in derived intestinal metabolites hamper its full benefits. The impact of solubility in flavanones metabolism and bioavailability was recently investigated by comparing Wellemon™, an eriocitrin-rich lemon fruit extract, with a hesperidin-rich orange extract. The pharmacokinetic study showed for the first time in humans hesperetin-eriodictyol interconversion, with higher bioactive metabolites than hesperidin following eriocitrin intake (Antioxidants 2021, 10, 435).
