A randomized, double-blind clinical trial found that daily supplementation with 10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin for six months significantly increased macular pigment optical density and improved attention and processing speed in teenagers with high screen time and low fruit and vegetable intake. The study, which used Bio-gen Extracts’ Lute-gen ingredient, reported no benefits for non-verbal memory, visual reasoning, or sleep. Previous research has linked lutein and zeaxanthin to cognitive and brain health in various age groups, but this is the first trial to demonstrate such cognitive benefits in teenagers. The authors emphasize the need for further research in populations with low macular pigment values and attentional or sleep difficulties.

UNPA, notable for its consensus-driven approach and global membership, has played a pivotal role in industry regulation and policy.
