Probiota Day 3: Modulation optimisation, pioneers and communication strategies
The NutraIngredients team is ready and raring to host its must-attend Probiota conference in Milan next month, and this week has been revealing more detail on what attendees can expect to enjoy throughout the three-day event.

With a key aim to bridge the worlds of science and business, this conference will provide an expert-packed schedule that covers all the hottest topics in probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics and synbiotics.

For 10 years, NutraIngredients has been bringing you Probiota, and the 2022 and 2023 events sold out. Probiota 2024 will take place 7-9 February at the NH Milano Congress Hotel in Milan.

According to our post-event survey for Probiota 2023, 95% of attendees rated the summit as Excellent or Good, and 94% said they would recommend it.

And 2024 promises to be just as compelling. Earlier this week, we revealed what to expect on Day 1 and Day 2. Here’s what to expect on Day 3.

Modulation optimisation

Our ability to effectively modulate the microbiome of an individual is influenced in large part by the hosts initial gut ecosystem. Day 3 will explore how advances in bioinformatic approaches can improve efficacy of microbiome modulation by better understanding host ecology and exploiting open niches, how supplements and foods can be better designed to feed the microbiome, and how emerging science around the virome and mycobiome can better inform our understanding for greater success.

The topic will open with a presentation from industry stalwart Dr. Jens Walter, professor of ecology, food, and the microbiome at University College Cork.

This will be followed by a panel discussion in which experts from dsm firmenich, Microbiome Solutions and Morinaga Milk Industry will delve further into the question of how to optimise our microbiome modulating abilities.

These experts will discuss the focus on the lower GI tract and what we know, or don’t know, about the small intestine and our ability to influence it via diet and supplements. The conversation will delve into what microbiome ecology teaches us about responders vs. non-responders and what we know about autochthonous vs allochthonous strains.

Next up, the audience will learn about the winners of NutraIngredients’ Probiota Pioneers programme. This year’s chosen startups—ProBioEtna, REM Analytics and WellVine—will each take to the stage to present their innovative businesses, which cover probiotics for women’s health, precision microbiome tests and upcycled prebiotics.

Closing with Communication

Finally, attendees will hear insights on the ever-important topic of consumer education and communication.

Leading experts in the field of microbiome communication joining this session include: Dr Federica Amati, head nutritionist at ZOE; Alana Macfarlane Kempner, founder and chief executive officer at The Gut Stuff; Sophie Medlin, head of nutrition research at Heights; and Dr Luis Gosalbez, managing director at Sandwalk BioVentures.

Dr Amati will showcase how ZOE has managed to become one of the most well-known and respected personalised nutrition firms, providing free regular consumer education via a range of platforms.

MacFarlane Kempner and Medlin will share a wealth of knowledge and experience in the realm of mass market communications, revealing the most effective language and imagery to capture mass market interest.

And Dr Gosalbez will provide an all-important regulatory perspective on this minefield topic.

The conference will close with a casual lunch and yet more networking opportunity.

As usual, spaces are filling up fast for this conference so make sure you book your place NOW via the event website.
