Coenzyme Q10 is “highly safe for use as a dietary supplement”, and has an acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 12 mg per kg per day, says a new review from Kaneka.

The review, published in BioFactors, is a risk assessment of the nutrient and is based on various clinical trial data. The authors concluded that the ADI, calculated from the no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) of 1200 mg per kg per day, would equate to a 720 mg dose per day for a person of 60 kilos.

The Kaneka scientists also note that there is no evidence that CoQ10 accumulates in the blood or body tissues after supplementation stops.

The review supports the findings of the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) from July 2006, published in the journal Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology.
