Within the course of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial including 74 participants in total the effect of a polyphenol-rich maqui berry extract (MaquiBright®) on tear fluid generation and eye fatigue was examined. The extract is standardised to comprise not less than 35% of total anthocyanins and at least 25% of delphinidins. Maqui berries have been used as a traditional remedy since ancient times in Patagonia. Likewise, the study underlined the promising potential of the berry as both objective and subjective signs of dry eyes were significantly improved.
