Supplement launched to moderate hunger

Canadian firm Vivitas this week launched a natural supplement for
those who want to lose weight by simply eating less.

The supplement, Satise, is designed to encourage over-eaters to consume smaller portions, by promoting a feeling of satisfaction and fullness from meals, according to the company.

The company cited in a statement a study carried out in 2002 that found that portion sizes in fast food restaurants in the US are two to five times larger than they were in the 1950s. Similar research published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association noted recently that portions of certain foods such as pasta, cereal and beverages have increased dramatically in just the last five years.

Vivitas claimed that portion sizes have never been bigger and suggested that this phenomenon can encourage over-eating by as much as 56 percent.

During the normal digestion process, certain proteins, fibres and simple sugars are responsible for releasing a compound called cholecystokinin (CCK) into the bloodstream. CCK then acts on the stomach to slow emptying, which induces a feeling of fullness and satiety.

Vivitas explained that the active ingredient in Satise is a protein extract derived from potatoes using a patented process that may naturally stimulate the release of CCK to help moderate hunger.

The company claims that unlike appetite suppressants, which may contain caffeine and PPA (an ingredient found in cough and cold medicines), a capsule of Satise does not contain stimulants and therefore does not cause side effects such as insomnia, dizziness and nausea.
