Sabinsa Corporation is launching two novel water-soluble ingredients, one from of Boswellia serrata, called Polybos, and the other called MoringIn from Moringa oleifera.

The company, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in the market, will launch the ingredients at today’s SupplySide Marketplace in New York.

Shaheen Majeed, Marketing Director, Sabinsa Corp., told NutraIngredients-USA: “PolyBos and MoringIn are part of the series of the new product launches that Sabinsa has planned for this year.”

Both ingredients are freely water soluble, he said, and hence can be used in variety of supplements: Capsules, tablets, chewables, beverages such as herbal teas, dietary supplement beverages, health drinks, and so on.

Polybos

“Polybos, being a product meant for Sports nutrition, can be used as a post exercise drink to reduce exercise-related inflammation in the joints and other related stress,” explained Majeed.

“Till now Sabinsa has focused primarily in the weight management and sport injury related inflammation management segments of Sports nutrition. Thus products like LeanGard, ForsLean, Boswellin, Boswellin Super, Boswellin PS have found a place in sports nutrition products. Citrin K is a one such example, with its application in sports nutrition beverages.

“In the same context, there has been ever increasing demand for beverage-grade Boswellia extracts, which can be useful for managing inflammation of joints and muscles that can result from strenuous exercise, and sports injury.

“PolyBos is an excellent resource of the management of such conditions. It is a completely water soluble extract with excellent activity against inflammation markers such as LTB4, and TNF alpha. This ingredient can be formulated in Mid and Post Exercise Health beverages and can be used as a caffeine free sports nutrition ingredient.”

Not a generic Moringa extract

While Polybos is positioned for sports nutrition, the company’s new Moringa oleifera extract has been developed as a general health dietary supplement, he said.

“Moringa is well known in India both as food and as an Ayurvedic herb, the leaves of the plant have come into focus more recently due to their nutritional composition. Studies have revealed that the leaves contain significant quantities of important vitamins such as A, B and C, minerals like calcium, potassium and iron, they are also rich in protein, thus good for managing malnutrition,” explained Majeed.

Sabinsa did not want to create a generic extract of Moringa, which already exists in the market, he added.

“We were focused on two different aspects of Moringa, firstly to design a beverage ingredient which can be used for general health including liver support, wound healing, ulcer protection and cardiovascular benefits, and secondly to concentrate on unique compounds which may be imparting the health benefits for which Moringa is well known.

“Rutin was one of the key compounds, which was part of the study on Moringa at Sabinsa. Rutin is a polyphenol and is a Selective PDI inhibitor (Protein Disulphide isomerase Inhibitor). PDI plays important role in mediating platelet aggregation. Moringa, with its nutritional profile, is also an excellent supplement for women’s health, providing a range of essential minerals and proteins.”

It was these specific health benefits that prompted the company to develop the specialized extract of Moringa, he said.

“The standardization of products has always been the benchmark for Sabinsa. In MoringIn we have come up with a unique extract which is bio-standardized to specific compounds and activity,” said Majeed.

“In MoringIn an excellent nutritional profile has been maintained to match the market requirement, apart from identifying and enriching the unique compound of health interest. This, along with its 100% water solubility profile, engages marketing companies like no other generic Moringa in the marketplace could.”

‘Overwhelming’ response to Curcumin C3 Reduct

Earlier this year, the company launched its ‘next generation’ of curcuminoids offering ‘greater potency, stability and much better bioavailability’. Curcumin C3 Reduct was launched at the Engredea show in Anaheim, and is a patented and clinically safe 95% tetrahydrocurcuminoids ingredient.

“The response from manufacturers, end consumers, and formulators has been overwhelming,” said Majeed. “Several companies have already launched with C3 Reduct supplements in the marketplace, and even more companies have shown interest.

“We are in discussions now for their new formulations to include Sabinsa’s Curcumin C3 Reduct ingredient.  We’ve also noticed a lot of discussion about it on health blogs, with consumers sharing information about where to find finished products containing C3 Reduct.”

Consumer awareness of the benefits of curcumin and turmeric is increasing, and, over the last couple of years, “curcumin/turmeric definitely can be considered as one of the most discussed, talked about and researched herb,” he said.

“The consumer awareness can be gauged from the fact that there are newer and newer formulations, which are getting introduced in the market with health benefits for conditions that affect all stages of life.”
