German collagen supplier Gelita has launched a new ingredient for the endurance athlete, with its new PetpEndure-branded ingredient reported to boost performance and improve energy metabolism.

The ingredient was launched at SupplySide West 2023, with a spokesperson for Gelita telling NutraIngredients-USA, “This is novel in the endurance space”.

“PeptEndure is the first collagen protein on the market shown to enhance the effects of endurance training and long-term performance through adaptive muscle changes,” states the company. “It therefore offers a fundamental, sustainable strategy for change rather than a mere quick-fix.”

The ingredient is supported by data from two placebo-controlled studies which showed that, after consumption, participants were able to run 14% faster, which could be the difference between finishing fifth or coming first, said the company.

The first study, published in 2020 in Frontiers in Nutrition, focused on women, and found that 12 weeks of PeptEndure supplementation (15 grams per day) during training led to a “significant increase in endurance performance compared to the control group”

Scientists from the University of Freiburg in Germany also reported that the PeptEndure group had a significantly greater running distance in a one hour time trial, running 330 meters more than the control group.

“Our results indicated that supplementation of SCP [specific collagen peptides] in combination with [concurrent training] resulted in a statistically significant increase in the time-trial performance compared to the control group. This might be a potential consequence of improved cardiometabolic parameters, mainly aerobic metabolism, as measured in the incremental treadmill test,” they wrote.

“Moreover, heart rate at the individual anaerobic threshold was improved after SCP intake, indicating an improved biomechanical motor competence. Both, the metabolic and structural adaptations could have led to an enhanced running velocity and improved running economy.

“In this context, the additional intake of SCP after [concurrent training] appears to be beneficial to further improve the effect of endurance training on fat free mass and muscular endurance.”

The results from a study in men are said to be even greater. The study in men, which is slated to published later this year, reportedly showed a greater than 660 meter increase in running distance during a one hour time trial.

“Gelita is once again leading the way in the global health and nutrition market with innovative product launches,” says Angie Rimel, Gelita North America Marketing Communications Manager. “The addition of PeptEndure to our sports nutrition portfolio offers industry and sports enthusiasts the ability to go the extra mile with a ground-breaking collagen peptide clinically proven to support increased endurance.”
