Forms of oligosaccharides derived from some vegetables, grains like lupine, cottonseed and soy whey could have commercial applications following an in vitro study that demonstrated prebiotic gut health benefits.
The gut health of elderly people is positively changed by
xylooligosaccharides, found in bamboo shoots, fruit, vegetables and
honey, and was more efficient than fructooligosaccharides and
inulin, Taiwanese researchers report.
Regulations concerning the addition of inulin, fructo
oligosaccharides (FOS) and galacto oligosaccharides (GOS) to foods,
both as a nutritive substance and as a sweetener, are being
considered in Australia and New Zealand.
Belgian supplier of prebiotic ingredients Orafti Active Food
Ingredients will hold its fourth research conference, 'Inulin and
Oligofructose: FeelGood Factors for Health and Well-being', in
Paris in February 2004.
