UK opens DMAA cases
The UK placed three alerts on the RASFF system last month concerning the stimulant 1,3 dimethylamylamine (DMAA).
The alerts concerned DMAA shipments from South Africa and Cyprus, with the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN) assisting on the South African case.
DMAA was sold in the past as a pre-workout and so-called fat-burning supplement, but was later banned in many countries after it was linked to cases of high blood pressure, nausea, cerebral haemorrhage, stroke and death.
It may also be listed on the packaging as geranium extract, geranamine, methylhexanamine and 4-methylhexane-2-amine.
