Emu oil not immune to Romanian powers
Romania rejected a batch of emu oil supplements – oil derived from the fat of the Australian bird – coming in from the US and Canada this month.
Such products caught the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) attention back in 2010 for its guidance on ‘How to Spot Health Fraud’. The authority said a pure emu oil product marketed to treat or cure a wide range of diseases and ailments - including rheumatism, arthritis, infections, prostate problems, ulcers, cancer and diabetes - was an unapproved drug.
“Be suspicious of products that claim to cure a wide range of unrelated diseases - particularly serious diseases, such as cancer and diabetes. No product can treat every disease and condition, and for many serious diseases, there are no cures, only therapies to help manage them,” the FDA wrote.
According to this latest RASFF alert, the product did not have health certificates and the complaint was logged as an adulteration/fraud.
