Stimulating action
There were two cases of supplements blocked for containing the sexual stimulant yohimbine this month.
The first was headed for Norway via Sweden from the US. The second, also from the US, was bound for Spain before being picked up and destroyed.
Yohimbine is the active compound found in the bark of the African Pausinystalia yohimbe tree.
As a food supplement ingredient and traditional medicine it has been pushed as a sexual stimulant and aphrodisiac.
However its use in food supplements is illegal in the EU.
An investigation into its safety by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) back in 2013 proved inconclusive because of a lack of data.
Adulteration has been an issue for the supplement sector in the EU and the US.
Neither of the cases published on RASFF this month resulted in a warning to the public.
